Resilience and Energy Storage: The Role of Microgrids in the Grid of the Future

In recent years, the "new normal" of natural disasters has challenged the resiliency of the systems that society relies on during times of crisis. A lack of reliable backup power severely limits the ability of affected communities to recover. We see a strong need to have fully functioning off-grid energy systems powered by clean, abundant renewable energy across the globe.

In Puerto Rico, Blue Planet Energy has been working with key partners on the ground to ensure the availability of clean water and electricity in communities, hospitals, and schools through the deployment of reliable energy storage systems at critical infrastructure facilities around the island. This session provides an overview of the challenges Puerto Rico continues to face post-Hurricane Maria, presents solar-plus-storage solutions designed for resiliency applications, outlines the model Blue Planet Energy uses to create systems that are sustainable for the long-term, and highlights the outcomes of successful projects already in place.

Key Learning Points:
  • Presents various real-world energy storage resiliency case studies ranging from water pumping to cancer treatment facilities
  • Demonstrates the dynamics of implementing solar-plus-storage projects to aid in disaster relief projects
  • Showcases how NGOs and private business can coordinate to deploy community microgrids with a public purpose
