Rural Electrification Strategies for Next-Generation Utilities

Viable least-cost electrification strategies need to combine, at village or district-level, all technical solutions at hand: in particular grid extension, mini-grids, pico-grids and solar home systems. Yet, for the lack of harmonized product offering, old- and new-generation utility companies have each focused on one approach, leaving behind potential customers, profits and mutualisation gains.

A multi-product strategy raises design, procurement, integration and maintenance questions that Sagemcom, as an EPC and O&M contractor in rural electrification projects, has long battled with. Lessons learned have helped build a comprehensive value proposition that can help a new utility model arise in peri-urban and remote locations.

This presentation discusses key lessons learned in unlocking the new utility business model -- one that is end-to-end in scope from grid extension, mini-grids, pico-grids to solar home systems, all managed with the same technical & sales platforms.
