The Impact of Transport Electrification on Grid-Attached Microgrids and Fleet Operations

Industrial customers worldwide are onboarding renewable energy and storage to optimize energy costs. One example is the Binn Ecopark in Scotland, one of the UK's most fully integrated resource recovery complexes. It is working with Green Cat Renewables to implement an ambitious energy transition plan at the site. The ecopark is rolling out wind and solar generation, battery energy storage systems, and import-export capabilities, utilizing an AI-enabled software-as-a-service to implement load, wind, solar and energy pricing predictors, and optimize energy use across the site.

Coming soon to C&I sites everywhere: fleet electrification, adding a further level of complexity in orchestrating energy optimization between fixed assets and variable electricity assets (the vehicles). In this session we will build off the challenges from grid-attached C&I with renewables and discuss the additional ones when bolting e-fleets onto operations in planning and real time.

Key Takeaways:
  • Real-time management of load and storage in the context of uncontrollable solar and wind generation, and variable market pricing to continuously minimize cost of energy
  • To the above, overlaying e-fleets and the constraints of their route schedules and charging cycles which may conflict with lowest harmonized cost of energy
  • Dealing with finite grid connection capacity in the context of large e-fleet penetration
  • Dealing with real-time good and bad data and make optimal decisions continuously
