Integrated Monitoring and Control of Microgrid Operations For Rural Electrification

E.ON Off Grid Solutions, through its subsidiary Rafiki Power, has been building and operating mini- grids for rural electrification in Tanzania since 2014. This presentation provides an overview of the challenges of operating several remote microgrids and serving close to 1,000 customers via a pre- paid micro-utility model, and some of the technological approaches we have successfully applied to tackling these. Many of these approaches have been implemented into our Advanced Mini-grid Management Platform (AMMP): a software system which integrates customer management (including payments, metering, and communications), and smart asset health and performance monitoring. The presentation is framed around real-world case studies, including: asset health monitoring through real-time data access and alerting; driving down site visit costs through remote interventions; asset performance improvement through ongoing KPI analysis; end-to-end customer issue resolution through smart meter system monitoring and automated ticketing; driving customers' economic empowerment through auxiliary services such as product sales based on credit scoring.

    Stefan Trittler is the Engineering Manager at E.ON Off Grid Solutions and leading a team of engineers and technicians involved in the development, implementation and operation of the Rafiki Power Mini-Grids in Tanzania. Apart from GIS analysis, system design, project management, procurement and contractor management Stefan is also involved in the operation and troubleshooting of the installed systems. The experience of the team has led to the development of a customer and system management tool, called the Advanced Minigrid Management Platform (AMMP), which he will also present in his presentation. Before joining E.ON Off Grid Solutions / Rafiki Power Stefan has been active in the off- grid PV sector for almost 10 years, where he has served in a range of capacities including engineering and system design, technical management, sales, and R&D.
