Increasing Resiliency in the Commercial and Industrial Sector -- A Fleet of Solar-Plus-Storage Microgrid Projects Support Industrial Bakeries in Latin America

An owner of industrial food processing facilities with locations all across Latin and South America saw a common problem across the sites: the utility grid at these sites are frequently unstable. With a blackout of any time period, the industrial machines will be interrupted, ceasing operation until they can be restarted. In a food processing application, this typically means all the food on the line is thrown out, and the oven and other machines must be cleaned out. This downtime directly relates to significant revenue loss for the company. Approximately 4MWac of solar and 8MW/16MWh of energy storage were deployed across eight projects, and integrated with existing large diesel generators to create instantaneous and full facility backup power for the system owner. Additionally, the solar-plus-storage systems are utilized for time-of-use energy shifting to take advantage of the system between outages and reduce utility bills. So far, eight microgrids have been installed by Ageto's partner in Mexico City, controlled by the Ageto ARC microgrid controller, with eight more planned for later this year.

Key Learning Points:
  • Understanding the impacts of power outages for commercial and industrial facility owners
  • Advantages of integrating multiple energy resources to address power outages
  • Complex control solutions required for communications and system controls
  • Utilizing a portion of the ESS capacity to reduce utility bills
