Connecting Distributed Solar Assets to Environmental Markets: The D-REC Initiative and Financing the Energy Transition

The D-REC Initiative is a not-for-profit, multi-stakeholder, industry-led initiative to create a global market for distributed renewable energy. We are designing, delivering and demonstrating new ways to certify and value distributed renewable electricity attributes through the creation of a new, internationally recognized market instrument called the D-REC (Distributed Renewable Energy Certificate). D-RECs will enable the connection of distributed renewable energy and environmental markets, providing project developers with additional revenue streams and ultimately allowing the increased expansion of renewable energy in emerging markets around the world.
  • By creating a new distributed renewable energy market instrument, D-RECs will open the door to environmental markets for distributed solar project developers
  • Additional revenues generated by the D-RECs will help new projects be deployed, further accelerating the electrification of energy poor communities around the world
  • The Initiative is seeking partners from across the industry, including project developers, investors, philanthropic organisations and renewable energy buyers, to drive the positive impact achieved by the D-REC mechanism.
