Energy Cloud: Leveraging IoT to Scale Renewables-based Microgrids

IoT (Internet of Things) technologies and AI (Artificial Intelligence) are critical microgrid differentiators for efficient operations and remote monitoring and control, offering cleaner, more reliable power. This presentation will illustrate how they enable microgrids to scale and will provide clear examples of how:
  • Load monitoring and data collection provides critical information for optimal microgrid design and portfolio management
  • IoT allows the integration of different technologies, including solar, generators, and battery storage to optimize system performance and reduce operating costs
  • Internet connectivity for cloud-based data access is extendable to community members as WiFi hotspots
  • By incorporating weather and energy load predictions, AI optimizes performance to reduce the fuel cost of backup generators by up to 40% and maximize renewable energy usage
IoT and AI amplify microgrid benefits by integrating the best technologies for the application and providing cost effective, optimized operations.

Key Takeaways:
  • AI algorithms take data and turn it into cost saving, carbon footprint reducing automated actions
  • IoT technology integrates any smart device or system and enables existing systems to be upgraded with renewable energy
  • AI and IoT in microgrid systems improve the utilization of renewables and sustainable energy sources
