Smart Battery Rental System For Last Mile Consumers and E-Mobility: A Profitable Key Maker Business For Microgrid Operators

Mobile Power has developed and deployed a patented battery rental platform that allows profitable energy distribution in frontier markets where other products fail. Mobile Power's Battery rental Platform (MOPO) for household, businesses and e-mobility is operating with multiple microgrids, and Mobile Power is seeking strategic partnerships with more.

Mobile Power's model is focussed on the needs and reality of consumers Africa. Customers access energy with no deposit, no credit checks and no fixed payment structure. They pay for power on a daily rental basis as and when they need it. The technology enables track, control and management of the MOPO batteries, agents and end-users. MOPO works in areas with no mobile network coverage, and end-users can pay with cash whilst the MOPO system aggregates payments into the banking system via agents resulting in zero financial losses. Mobile Power started in 2013 and is now in Nigeria, Uganda, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Zambia and the list continues to expand.

Key Takeaways:
  • Increased revenue streams: ARPB/month >$5
  • Capex investment significant lower per battery than Mini-grid average price per cable connection
  • Extending the reach of the mini-grid, therefore increased impact in communities of operation
  • Optimised use of energy generation
  • Battery rental enables profitability: Mini-grid tariffs through cable distribution are controlled around $0.75/kWh, whilst with a MOPO cable free distribution the Mini-grid makes over $7/kWh
